Hiking to Serenity: Lake Evelyn, Byers Peak Wilderness
In the vast wilderness of Colorado, where over 40 areas beckon adventurers, I ventured to the lesser-explored Byers Peak Wilderness, specifically to the secluded Lake Evelyn. This hidden gem, as described by fellow hikers, is a place where solitude reigns, and the only company you're likely to keep is a handful of fellow explorers.
The journey begins with a 24-mile drive from Winter Park, a trek that transforms from a paved road to a dirt path, then a rugged, rocky trail. This road trip, though seemingly short, is a test of patience, taking approximately 90 minutes. The route winds through the forest, offering glimpses of beautiful meadows, a prelude to the tranquility that awaits.
Upon reaching the trailhead, a circular parking lot greets hikers, equipped with a register and a helpful sign showcasing a map of the area. The trail splits, with the left path leading to the St. Louis Divide Trail and Bottle Peak, and the right path, my chosen route, leading to the serene Lake Evelyn.
The initial stretch of the trail, just under a quarter mile, is unassuming, but it sets the stage for the adventure ahead. A subtle sign, easy to overlook, directs hikers to cross a bridge over Evelyn Creek, a small but crucial detail that ensures a smooth start to the hike.
As I ventured further, the trail's steady incline became apparent, promising an elevation gain of about 900 feet over 1.6 miles. The path, for the most part, stays close to Evelyn Creek, allowing hikers to enjoy the soothing sounds of cascades. However, the creek's proximity also means that dogs might find it challenging to access drinking water, so hikers should be mindful of this.
The good news comes as the trail eases its incline near the lake. The final 0.75 miles offer a gentler ascent, gaining only 200 feet, providing a welcome respite after the initial climb.
Lake Evelyn, nestled amidst trees, is a picture of tranquility. Its serene atmosphere invites hikers to find a shady spot or a tree stump for a well-deserved rest. On a Friday in July, I was one of the few visitors, sharing the lake's serenity with just three other adventurers.
The hike to Lake Evelyn is a moderate 5-mile round trip, with an elevation gain of 1,100 feet. It's a journey that rewards those seeking solitude and natural beauty. However, hikers should be cautious of dead trees in the area, as evidenced by the fallen tree that partially blocked our path on the descent.
