The Vietnamese government has extended the zero registration fee policy for electric vehicles (EVs) until 2030, aiming to accelerate the country's transition to greener transportation and support the domestic EV industry. This move is part of a broader strategy to reduce air pollution from road transport and encourage investment in EV manufacturing and supply chains. The policy, introduced under Decree No. 202/2026/NĐ-CP, will take effect on March 1, 2027, replacing the previous decree on registration fees. This is a significant step in Vietnam's efforts to promote cleaner transport alternatives and align with global trends in the automotive industry. The global EV market has been expanding rapidly, with sales exceeding 17 million units in 2024 and an estimated 20 million units in 2025, accounting for over 20% and a quarter of the total vehicle market, respectively. Many countries are phasing out fossil fuel-powered vehicles and investing in charging infrastructure to support the growing adoption of EVs. This policy extension in Vietnam is a strategic move to capitalize on the global shift towards electric mobility, potentially attracting more investment and fostering the development of a robust domestic EV industry. However, it also raises questions about the long-term sustainability of such incentives and the need for a comprehensive strategy to manage the transition to EVs, including the development of a robust charging infrastructure and the management of waste from EV batteries. In my opinion, this policy is a crucial step in Vietnam's environmental and economic development, but it also highlights the need for a well-planned transition to ensure the country's long-term sustainability and global competitiveness in the EV market.
