The flu season has kicked off with a slow start, and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) is using this opportunity to urge people to get their annual flu vaccination. With 2025 being the worst year on record for flu cases, the college is emphasizing the importance of prevention. Personally, I think it's fascinating that the flu season is starting so early, and it makes me wonder if we're seeing a shift in the timing of flu outbreaks. What makes this particularly interesting is the comparison with the previous year's record-breaking cases. In 2025, we saw a staggering 98,447 cases reported in just the first five months of the year, and 61,525 cases in June alone. This year, however, we're only seeing around one-third of that number, which is a significant drop. But, in my opinion, we can't afford to be complacent. While the slow start to the flu season might be a relief, it's important to remember that the flu is still a serious illness that can have severe consequences. One thing that immediately stands out is the impact of the flu on vulnerable populations. Children, seniors, and those at higher risk of disease are particularly susceptible to the flu, and it's crucial that we take steps to protect them. The RACGP is celebrating increased flu vaccination uptake, which is excellent news. The introduction of needle-free intranasal vaccines for young children has been a game-changer, and it's encouraging to see that uptake among patients under five years old is 15.7% higher than the same time in 2025 and 16.1% higher than in 2024. This is a significant improvement, and it's clear that making vaccines more accessible and less intimidating can have a real impact. However, there's still work to be done. Families in Victoria, Tasmania, the ACT, and the NT must pay privately for a needle-free flu vaccine, which is a barrier for many. I believe that governments should embrace intranasal vaccines as a solution that works, and subsidizing free access to these vaccines would be a step in the right direction. The slow start to the flu season really gives an extra opportunity to protect our most vulnerable Australians, not only against influenza but also against COVID and RSV, which are also available from your GP. In my view, this highlights the importance of a holistic approach to healthcare, where we address multiple health concerns simultaneously. The RACGP is the peak representative organization for general practice in Australia, and their efforts to promote flu vaccination are crucial. By setting standards for general practice, facilitating lifelong learning for GPs, and advocating for better health and wellbeing for all Australians, the RACGP is making a real difference. In conclusion, the slow start to the flu season is a reminder that we can't take our health for granted. While it might be tempting to relax and wait for the flu to pass, it's important to take proactive steps to protect ourselves and our loved ones. By getting vaccinated and embracing needle-free intranasal vaccines, we can help prevent the flu from becoming worse than necessary and ensure that our hospitals are not overwhelmed. This is a call to action for all of us to take responsibility for our health and the health of our communities.
